HEBREW to ENGLISH: IDIOM DICTIONARY
Specialized dictionary of unique Hebrew/Loshan Kodesh idioms and expressions that comprise the jargon of the Torah Jewish scholar; terms often originally from Jewish texts.
This site is created for the assemblage of contemporary Hebrew idioms and jargon that originate from Judaic Hebrew works. These terms have evolved to be part of the vocabulary in additional languages, especially Yiddish and English. Many of these Hebrew terms have departed from their original meaning as they were intended in Judaic texts and are used in colloquial language with unique meaning.

This site is user driven. If you are familiar with relevant terms, please contribute. Your contribution helps expand the collection of this rich jargon. You can contribute by registering as a contributor on the mediawiki. In order to avoid spammers, you can only register by sending us an email to admin@kneitch.com. We will promptly respond with a user name and temporary password. You can then add or edit the term/s. We are looking for a brief description of each definition in everyday use and what its literal definition is, if applicable.
Please add the terms in Hebrew with English transliteration in parathesis and the definition in English. Example: דוגמה (dogmah): an example

- If the search results turn up "There is no page titled "דוגמה". You can create this page', click on "create this page"
- In the open window that comes up, type in whatever explanation you want to add for the term, and then save.

Why we created www.kneitch.com; a lomdossory
This site was inspired by Chavala's experience as a Chasidic student of Hebrew studies. In the studies of Judaic texts we came across numerous fascinating terms that have departed from their original meaning and became part of non-scholarly everyday vocabulary. We found that many words that transcended Hebrew, Yiddish or English comprise their own category of rich idioms. These terms are so plentiful and important, those unfamiliar with the jargon do not understand the conversation and many intimate references.
We therefore created this site as a centralized, web based compilation of this collection of specialized terms. The lexicon collects these terms and examines each term's original meaning in , perhaps textual, occurrences as well as its colloquial meaning.
This site is dedicated to all Chasidic women who don't know their language.
